When I was in my early twenties I loved to host themed parties; especially costume parties. Sadly I moved away, and no longer have a group of friends to do those kinds of parties with, so I haven’t hosted one in years. While I was looking through old photos the other day, I came across these from 2014 when I hosted an “Old Hollywood Glamour” party with my friend. It was such a good idea for a theme since it gave everyone an excuse to dress up in their fanciest cocktail attire.

And as far as parties go, it was pretty easy to throw together. My friend helped make the food and brought some of the dishes, and we set it up buffet style. The decor consisted of several bouquets of roses and baby’s breath, white candles, gold and silver sequins sprinkled on the table, white table linens, and pretty crystal punch bowls, tumblers and wine glasses.

I also made some black and white invitations with a vaguely Art Deco feel to them.

We framed the menu so people could refer to it as they went through the line.

  • Salt and pepper breaded chicken
  • Spinach and prosciutto florentines
  • Ginger and chilli meatballs
  • Cranberry meatballs
  • Vegetables with a choice of avocado chive, creamy pesto or ranch dip
  • A fruit and cheese plate

I don’t know why I didn’t take a photo of the dessert table. For dessert we served:

  • Earl Grey tea ice cream
  • Coconut macaroons
  • Mini Red Velvet, Black Forest, Orange or Vanilla cakes with a choice of cream cheese or mocha frosting

And to drink we served pink lemonade in crystal tumblers and wine glasses.

And here is what I wore that evening- a plum coloured net dress with a handkerchief hem. I bought the dress at the thrift store and found some taffeta in a coordinating colour so I sewed a matching bolero, straps for the dress and a belt with an oversized bow on the back. I don’t have the dress anymore- the photo on the right is the only other photo I could find (from 2016)  it’s really too bad I never got better photos of the set as I loved it and wore it quite a few times!

I used to have quite a collection of vintage evening wear, but never had any occasions to wear them, so it was nice to create a reason every once in a while. I no longer have any cocktail dresses in my closet, although I do have lots of rhinestone jewelry still. Perhaps evening wear is something I should sew….and then host a party to wear it to!
